Manchester United beat AS Saint-Étienne 2–0 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup first-round second leg on 5 October 1977, played at Home Park, Plymouth, after UEFA ordered the match away from Old Trafford due to crowd trouble in France.

Stuart Pearson opened the scoring before Steve Coppell sealed victory, sending United through 3–1 on aggregate.

The match featured United stars Gordon Hill and Lou Macari, while Saint-Étienne’s lineup included Dominique Rocheteau and Osvaldo Piazza in front of 31,634 fans.
