Bryan Robson headed the opener after Terry Butcher’s flick from Kenny Sansom’s long throw, and Gordon Cowans added his first England goal after the break.
Peter Shilton won his 50th cap, while Bobby Robson’s side overcame a Scotland team featuring Graeme Souness and Gordon Strachan in front of 84,000 fans.
